Greening the Heartland 2012 Recap
Most people in our industry have heard of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the Washington D.C. based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is "committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings".
Honorable Mention: Commercial Buildings, Existing
Morrissey Engineering provided the mechanical and electrical design, commissioning services, and LEED consulting services for this Class A office building renovation. See the outstanding results in the ASHRAE Journal April 2012.
Design Approach for Data Center Engineering
Continuing Education is always a good thing. It seems like the older we get, the more we think acquiring additional education on subjects we feel we have an expertise in provides marginal returns on the time invested. However, I have found that even if a continuing education effort doesn’t provide groundbreaking information on the latest trends in subject matter, a beneficial experience can still be had.
The Future of Energy Codes
There is no shortage of requirements dictating our day to day tasks as consulting engineers. Adding to the specific conditions of individual jobs and client needs are an ever-changing congregation of codes and standards that have significant impact on how we design mechanical and electrical systems for buildings. And even just the topic of ‘energy codes’ is quite vast, but this post sets out to lay the groundwork for where we’re at now and where the industry is headed.
Striving to Create the Best Buildings Possible
Consulting Engineers have often considered themselves generalists with a good basic knowledge of the systems that they specify. More and more though, our clients need a deeper understanding from us in order to create the best buildings possible.
Feeling the winter blues?
The days are getting shorter and your mood may be darkening too. Did you know that artificial light can be used to mimic daylight, and comes with the same health benefits?
Benefits of Temperature Setback in Residential Applications
Most homes are controlled through a wall mounted thermostat. This device allows the resident to control the heating / cooling equipment so that it maintains a desired space temperature.
USGBC Leadership Awards Nominations
The U.S. Green Building Council is calling for nominations for the 2010 USGBC Leadership Awards. Award nominees should embody the attributes expected of a green building leader and achievements that demonstrate excellence, exemplify the intent and spirit of the green building movement, and have made a significant impact in advancing the green building movement within their sector. Nominate a peer.
USGBC Needs Your Input
The U.S. Green Building Council's mission of environmentally, economically and socially sustainable buildings for all within a generation depends on highly trained professionals in every sector. The USGBC is requesting your input in a brief survey that will help us identify and understand your green building education needs. The information you provide will drive both the content and format of tomorrow's green building education - from USGBC or the green building education marketplace at large - so that it is accessible and relevant for everyone. Take the survey.
Solar Electric System Installed
Morrissey Engineering has begun commissioning of a 5.5 kW solar electric system on the roof of its 4940 Building. The system converts sunlight to electric power using Sanyo photovoltaic modules.
