Longmont Data Center
Longmont, CO

Morrissey Engineering provided mechanical, and electrical design services for this new 46,000 SF facility for the West Corporation. A 10,000 SF raised floor data center is housed within this facility to support call centers across the world, and is one of three main data centers for the company. This facility was designed to TIA 942 Tier 3 data center guidelines, and encompasses the following  items of note:

10,000 SF computer room initial, expandable to 20,000 SF

100% backup generation with closed transition paralleling controls – 4.5MW generator plant

Redundant power company circuits and automatic throw over (ATO)

2 1500KVA (N+1) dual bus UPS systems

High efficiency 1000 Ton N+1 chilled water system with water side economizer (free cooling)

Hot aisle / cold aisle equipment arrangement with provisions for cold aisle containment.

Failure scenarios were developed for the electrical systems to test the performance and responsiveness of the equipment during real  outage and failure situations. Load banks were connected during these test to represent the data center load and completely evaluate the entire electrical system prior to the actual data center equipment  installation.

Complete MEP commissioning services for this facility  were performed by Morrissey Engineering. Custom functional performance tests were written for all of the mechanical and electrical systems to ensure the Owners up-time needs would be met. Serving as the Commissioning Authority for the project Morrissey Engineering coordinated all of the commissioning efforts, and ensured the Owner’s project requirements, as well as the engineers design intent objectives were achieved.

Data center projects involve multiple contractors working on many different systems. The commissioning effort brings all of these trades together to form a commissioning team with a common goal. With all of the intricate and complex systems involved in a data center, having a key coordination contact for the owner makes the project more efficient, effective, sustainable and functional for years to come.

Thermal imaging was utilized during the commissioning process. To evaluate the electrical and mechanical systems. Through the use of these images potential problems can be identified and corrected before serious system damage occurs.
