Morrissey Engineering partnered with Sinclair Hille Architects and BNIM to deliver comprehensive design services for the transformative new construction of the Westbrook Music Building and the thoughtful renovation of the iconic Kimball Recital Hall on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus. This project reflects a bold investment in the arts, enhancing the learning environment for students while positioning the university as a premier destination for music and dance education.
The newly constructed Westbrook Music Building is a state-of-the-art facility accommodating a broad spectrum of musical and dance disciplines. The building features an array of rehearsal halls tailored to specific performance needs—from the influential Cornhusker Marching Band and expressive opera program to specialized spaces for percussion, jazz, orchestral, choir, and chamber music ensembles. Complementing these spaces are modern instructional classrooms, faculty offices, and individual practice rooms—each crafted with acoustical precision and user experience in mind.
The Kimball Recital Hall underwent an extensive renovation to preserve its historical significance while integrating cutting-edge amenities. The updated hall now includes a 300-seat recital space with enhanced acoustics, a world-class digital recording facility, and modernized backstage areas to support performances and student development.
The project also introduces inviting outdoor green space, thoughtfully integrated into the campus fabric to host concerts, community events, and informal gatherings, expanding the performance experience beyond the walls of the building.
This collaborative effort creates a dynamic, future-forward environment that not only enriches student life but also has the potential to attract top-tier talent and faculty to Nebraska, strengthening the university's position as a leader in arts education.
